Delivering Aid to Gaza is Almost Impossible. Why hasn’t America gotten Involved

Delivering Aid to Gaza is Almost Impossible. Why hasn't America gotten Involved

According to a UN official on Monday, Israel’s latest round of extensive evacuation orders prompted the organisation to halt nearly all aid operations in Gaza. Additionally, the UN World Food Programme said on Wednesday that it would be temporarily stopping staff travel to Gaza following an attack on one of its vehicles as it approached an Israeli checkpoint. Proponents contend that the US has a responsibility to speak out, especially in light of the rise in childhood malnutrition in Gaza and the spread of polio, a disease that is highly contagious but preventable.

In response to the UN’s suspension of its aid operations in Gaza, the US government has run out of things to say and hasn’t even released its customary performative statements, according to Raed Jarrar, the advocacy director of the Washington, DC-based human rights nonprofit Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN). Legal experts claim that under the Geneva Convention, attacking aid workers and preventing civilians from receiving humanitarian aid could be considered war crimes.

The UN is also announcing that Gaza’s civilian population is in grave danger. Between May and July, the children of Gaza experienced a surge in acute malnutrition, according to data from OCHA, the organisation that coordinates humanitarian efforts.
