KINSHASA: In a fresh wave of violence in the tumultuous Ituri province in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported Tuesday that residents were suffering “horrific” wounds. Rich in gold Ethnic militia conflicts and attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group associated with Daesh, have long plagued Ituri.
The battle is unrelated to the bloodshed in Ituri, but it is located just north of North and South Kivu provinces, where the M23 armed group, which Rwanda supports, has taken control of sizable areas in recent months.
A renewed spike in atrocities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ituri province, where its medical teams are providing care for civilians with horrific injuries,” the medical charity, which goes by the French abbreviation MSF, reported. According to UN statistics, attacks have killed over 200 people in January and February alone, and violence has displaced around 100,000 people since the year began. Up until mid-March, MSF reported that women and children accounted for over half of the violence victims it treated at its clinic in Bunia, the provincial capital.
