Erdogan Charges that the West is Supporting Israeli "Plans to Spread War"

On Wednesday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, charged that Western nations were supporting Israeli intentions to strike Lebanon and “spread war” throughout the region.

He addressed MPs from his ruling AKP party, saying, “Israel is now setting its sights on Lebanon and we see that Western powers behind the scenes are patting Israel on the back and even supporting them.”

Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, declared that “Netanyahu’s plans to spread the war to the region will lead to a great disaster.”

His comments coincided with growing alarm that the cross-border gunfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran in Lebanon, could escalate into a full-fledged conflict.

Hamas militants launched an unprecedented strike on southern Israel, sparking a large continuing Israeli retaliation operation that led to the outbreak of border conflict in Lebanon.

Declaring the maneuver defensive, Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces are now finishing up the most intense phase of the Gaza operation and would redeploy to the northern border.

Israel declared last week that its plans for an attack on Lebanon had been “approved and validated.”
