ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that he told his US counterpart Donald Trump that Venezuela must not devolve into chaos, days after the US toppled his ally Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Erdogan stated that he spoke with Trump on the phone regarding the US operation that resulted in Maduro’s arrest in Caracas and transfer to the United States. Any attack on the sovereignty of the people and any breach of international law will cause serious complications within the international order,” Erdogan said that Trump had informed him.
Venezuela must not plunge into disorder or instability,” he told Turkish television following a cabinet meeting. After months of threats and pressure tactics, US forces blasted Venezuela’s capital on Saturday, toppling Maduro and ending his 12-year tenure.
Maduro declared not guilty in a New York court on Monday to cocaine trafficking accusations. “When force trumps law, instability, crises, and battles follow,” Erdogan warned. We seek to behave in the best interests of both Turkey and the friendly Venezuelan people. “Mr. Maduro and the Venezuelan people continue to show their friendship for our country,” he said.
