As the first foreign leader to visit General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in his war capital, Port Sudan, since the beginning of the battle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Ethiopian Premier Abiy Ahmed met the army head on Tuesday.
Viewed as more aligned with the RSF than the army, Abiy welcomed its head Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo to Addis Ababa in December and presented the visit as a step toward restoring stability to Sudan following over 15 months of fighting.
Nearly ten million people have been displaced from their homes as a result of the conflict between the Sudanese military factions, which has also put the country in danger of becoming unstable.
The army is in charge of the eastern and northern states, including Port Sudan, which has served as its base, while the RSF has seized most of the country’s capital, Khartoum, as well as the center and west of Sudan.
The efforts to get the army back to the negotiating table have not succeeded, and talks that the US and Saudi Arabia were hosting in Jeddah with the intention of mediating a ceasefire fell through last year.
Following the arrival of the Ethiopian leader, Burhan and Abiy were seen in photos released by both parties laughing and holding hands. The visit was described as a component of the search for “sustainable solutions for Sudan’s stability” by Abiy’s office on X.
