ROME: All of Italy’s main cities were placed on the highest heat alert Thursday as a blistering heat wave swept throughout Europe, breaking a national temperature record in Austria, fuelling wildfires in France and affecting energy and transport systems across the continent.
The unusual weather has pushed temperatures above 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in a number of countries, triggering health warnings for millions of people. Scientists and officials say such catastrophes are growing more powerful and more often as the climate warms.
The current hot wave has revealed weaknesses in public health systems, electricity generation, transportation networks and tourism infrastructure, pushing governments and businesses to adjust to more frequent times of extreme weather.
Italy’s Health Ministry placed all 27 cities under its national heat surveillance system on red alert on Thursday, the first time this year the entire network has been on the highest warning level at the same time. The signals, which extend from Trieste in the northeast to Palermo in Sicily, indicate a health danger for the entire population, not just vulnerable groups such as older persons and people with chronic conditions.
