Riyadh: For his groundbreaking work, Muslim scientist Jabir ibn Hayyan is referred to as the “father of chemistry.”
He discovered important chemicals that are still in use today. He was born in 721.
The life and contributions of the early scientist are being honoured at the 2024 STEAM Festival at King Salman Science Oasis in Riyadh, according to a Saturday report from the Saudi Press Agency. Under the theme “Fun Chemistry,” the festival runs through September 30 and provides engaging, educational, and fun experiences.
Ibn Hayyan’s inventions, such as distillation, substantially advanced chemistry in both the Islamic and Western worlds. His works were widely disseminated through Latin translations.
Silver nitrate, gold water, sulphuric acid, and hydrochloric acid are among the notable discoveries. He also looked into useful applications like making steel, waterproofing, and artificial pearls. Chemistry was sometimes called “the science of Jabir,” and Ibn Khaldun, the scholar, hailed him as “the imam of chemistry writers.”
It explores science and technology from the past, present, and future through 100 workshops, panel discussions, live performances, and interactive exhibits in STEAM fields. The event reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to scientific advancement by showcasing regional innovations, sustainable practices, and cutting-edge technologies.
