On Monday, the attorney general of Florida filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, alleging that the company’s ChatGPT chatbot puts young users in danger by encouraging hazardous actions and getting them addicted.
James Uthmeier stated during a news conference, “We’re here to announce that we recently filed a monumental civil lawsuit against Sam Altman and ChatGPT for endangering our kids and deceiving parents into believing that this application is safe for use.
Uthmeier cites a recent Drexel University study in the complaint, which was examined by AFP, that shows teens who use Character chatbots experience sleep loss, decreasing grades, and less social contact.AI is a conversational rival of OpenAI.
Using penal provisions for deceit and negligence, the attorney general criticizes OpenAI for failing to implement more stringent measures to verify users’ ages. The lawsuit contends that “despite public knowledge of ChatGPT’s use by minors, including preteens, defendants have not taken steps to prevent their use of ChatGPT.
Additionally, it states that although the paid subscription ostensibly requests users’ ages, “the free version of ChatGPT has no gatekeeping or age verification mechanism whatsoever” and that “there is no mechanism to verify the age of its users, and no ability to inform parents of what conversations minors are having with ChatGPT.”
