Following Trump's Remarks, Russia Calls For Prudence in Nuclear "Rhetoric"

MOSCOW: Following an online spat with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, US President Donald Trump announced he would deploy two nuclear submarines on Monday, prompting Russia to issue a warning. The submarines would be stationed in “appropriate regions,” according to Trump, who claimed he had authorized the deployment in reaction to Medvedev’s allegedly extremely aggressive remarks.

Trump did not specify if he was referring to submarines with nuclear propulsion or armaments. He also didn’t go into detail about the sites, which the US military keeps under wraps. When it comes to nuclear non-proliferation, Russia pays close attention. On Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, including those from AFP, that “we think that everyone should be very, very cautious with nuclear rhetoric.”

Medvedev and Trump’s disagreement started when the US president threatened to impose more economic penalties, including on its remaining trading partners, unless Russia halted its military campaign in Ukraine. One of Russia’s most well-known anti-Western hawks, Medvedev, said that Trump was “playing the ultimatum game” and advised him to “remember” that Russia was a powerful country. Every new directive is a warning and a step closer to conflict. “With his own country, not between Russia and Ukraine,” he stated.
