French PM Criticizes EU-US Trade deal as'Submission

PARIS: French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou denounced a weekend trade pact between the United States and the European Union on Monday, calling it a “dark day” and equal to “submission,” as other lawmakers condemned the agreement.

“It is a dark day when an alliance of free peoples, united to affirm their values and defend their interests, resorts to submission,” Bayrou said in a post on the X of the pact, which was reached on Sunday. US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reached an agreement that established a 15 percent baseline tax on EU exports to the US.

French President Emmanuel Macron did not immediately comment Monday to the high-stakes pact, which attracted criticism from much of the French political spectrum. Stock markets in Europe and Asia climbed on optimism that the pact would prevent a potentially devastating trade war. However, many French lawmakers were not convinced.

Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged Europe’s commercial capitulation yesterday, at the expense of our exporters, farmers, and manufacturers,” Jordan Bardella, head of the far-right National Rally, said on X.
