Medical Records Uncover the Deep Impact of Violent Injuries in Gaza

According to data published in the medical journal The Lancet, about half of the injuries treated at Medecins Sans Frontieres’ outpatient clinics in Gaza last year were from Israeli bomb and bullet wounds.

The statistics showed that youngsters made up about one-third of the day patients treated for such injuries at the charity’s health centers in the region, underscoring the terrible human cost of the nearly two-year conflict on Palestinian residents.

In 2024, the institutions performed over 200,000 outpatient consultations. Nearly 40,000 of them were brought on by “violent trauma,” mostly from bombing, shelling, and gunfire, and over 90,000 of them featured injuries.

Although they are intended for use in open combat zones, explosive weapons are also being utilized more frequently in cities, the paper added. “There is very little protection against explosive weapons, and particularly their secondary effects like blast, shrapnel, and incendiary impact, in the makeshift shelters where people live after being displaced frequently.”

According to data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the Israeli offensive in Gaza has killed close to 63,000 Palestinians, with roughly half of them being women and children. Many governments and international organizations have called the offensive a genocide.
