Gazans Say Goodbye to a Year of Suffering, Welcome New Hope

Gaza City: As 2025 comes to an end, Palestinians in Gaza are greeting the new year with weariness, sorrow, and a tenuous hope that their “endless nightmare” would eventually come to an end rather than with joy. Everyday life is a battle for survival for those who live in the damaged area.

After being frequently displaced by the two years of conflict that started with Hamas’s onslaught on Israel in October 2023, hundreds of thousands of people live in makeshift tents, much of Gaza’s infrastructure is in ruins, and energy is still limited.

Hanaa Abu Amra, a thirty-year-old displaced woman residing in Gaza City, stated, “We in the Gaza Strip are living in an endless nightmare. We hope that in 2026, this horror will come to an end. To see electricity restored, the streets return to normal, and to walk without tents lining the roads is the least we can ask for,” she stated. Scenes of suffering are frequent in Gaza, a region home to over two million people. According to Shireen Al-Kayali, the past year was filled with anxiety and unrelenting grief.
