Germany Will Speak with the Taliban Directly on Deportations

BERLIN: In an effort to facilitate the repatriation of criminals to Afghanistan, Germany’s interior minister stated on Thursday that he desired direct communication with Taliban officials. In an interview with Focus magazine, Alexander Dobrindt said, “I see us directly entering into agreements with Afghanistan to facilitate deportations.”

As of right now, Berlin only communicates with the Taliban indirectly through third parties, a situation that Dobrindt stated “cannot remain a permanent solution.” After the Taliban regained control in 2021, Germany shuttered its consulate in Kabul and halted deportations to Afghanistan.

However, with the development of the far-right Alternative für Germany (AfD) party, migration had become a significant issue, sparking a debate about reinstating expulsions. Following indirect talks with the Taliban by Germany’s previous administration, 28 Afghan citizens with criminal convictions were deported in August of last year.

No more deportations have occurred. However, the controversy has persisted, particularly in the wake of a string of fatal assaults that were attributed to asylum seekers last year, with several suspects hailing from Afghanistan.

Along with a crackdown on irregular migration, Germany’s new government, a coalition of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) and the conservative CDU/CSU, has pledged to remove more foreign offenders.
