Hamas Suggests a Weapons Freeze: What This Could Mean for a Long-Term Truce

DOHA: A senior Hamas official told the Qatari news outlet Al Jazeera on Wednesday that while the militant organization is amenable to a “freeze” on weapons, it opposes the disarmament demand made in the US-sponsored peace plan for Gaza.

The resistance (Hamas) rejects the notion of complete disarmament. In an interview that aired on Wednesday, Khaled Meshaal stated, “What is being proposed is a freeze, or storage (of weapons) to provide guarantees against any military escalation from Gaza with the Israeli occupation.

“We’re talking about this concept with the mediators, and I think that with practical American thinking, such a vision could be agreed upon with the US administration,” he stated. After Hamas launched a fatal attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the conflict was put on hold by the US-sponsored ceasefire agreement, which has been in force since October 10. However, it is still precarious because Israel and Hamas accuse one another of violations virtually every day.

There are three stages to the agreement. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, recently hinted that the second phase would soon begin. During that phase, Hamas would surrender its weapons and Israeli troops would further withdraw from their posts in Gaza, to be replaced by an international stabilization force (ISF).
