RIYADH: The Ministry of Defense said in separate posts on X that five missiles and five drones targeted at various locations in the Kingdom were intercepted and destroyed by Saudi Arabia’s air defenses on Friday. According to the ministry, on Friday night, the Kingdom intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile close to the central Al-Kharj area.Earlier in the day, several strikes were tried before the attack.
Three ballistic missiles were launched toward Prince Sultan Air Base in the Al-Kharj governorate, according to the ministry’s first post, which was published just after midnight. The government claimed in later posts that two drones were shot down, one in Al-Kharj and one in the Eastern Province. The ministry declared early in the morning that four drones had been intercepted in the eastern Riyadh area after a cruise missile had also been intercepted near Al-Kharj.
Hours after a drone strike over the Eastern Province’s Ras Tanura refinery was halted, three cruise missiles aimed at Al-Kharj were intercepted, setting the stage for Friday’s bombardment. Al-Kharj is a significant industrial area around 80 kilometres southeast of Riyadh, the country’s capital.
Eight drones were successfully intercepted by Saudi defenses on March 3 in the vicinity of Riyadh and Al-Kharj. On the same day, drones attacked the US Embassy in Riyadh, resulting in a small fire and some minor structural damage. Iran’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, made a statement on Thursday in which he unequivocally rejected his country’s involvement, even though the location was attacked.
