How One Woman in Alkhobar Is Transforming Her Community Through Art

ALKHOBAR: Women in Alkhobar get together once a week to paint, relax, and foster artistic connections. Hend Al-Mousa, a 25-year-old, started the initiative, named Salam (Arabic for “Peace), to establish a calm environment for self-expression.

The course, held at a small studio every weekend, is open to women of all ages. The public can register using Instagram, and there is a nominal participation charge that supports refreshments and supplies. Al-Mousa told Arab News, “Let me start with the meaning of the name ‘Salam. I decided to create a place that embodies the tranquility I wish to live by a place where everyone is free to breathe, be themselves, and express who they are without any outside demands. Salam is a secure environment for all.

Until the beginning of the month, she keeps the theme a secret so that our friends at Salam live in the moment they’re in.” We go on to the next moment once everyone has experienced it thoroughly. The sessions are now more than just a get-together for art. These days, many people return regularly, making friends and receiving emotional support from the shared experience. Al-Mousa remarked, “It’s incredible to see how art connects people. Some are quiet and reserved when they first arrive, but after a few sessions, they become more talkative and begin to share personal narratives.
