RIYADH: Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that Russia and the United States have decided to begin efforts to improve their diplomatic and economic relations and put an end to the conflict in Ukraine. According to Rubio, the two sides mostly agreed to pursue three objectives: re-establishing staffing at their respective embassies in Moscow and Washington, assembling a high-level team to assist with peace negotiations in Ukraine, and investigating deeper ties and economic collaboration.
However, he emphasised that the discussions, which were hosted by Saudi Arabia and attended by Sergey Lavrov, his Russian counterpart, were only the start of a dialogue and that further work must be done in the future. The meeting, which took place without Ukrainian authorities, comes as the embattled nation is gradually losing territory to more numerous Russian forces in a gruelling conflict that started almost three years ago.
The war has caused ties between the US and Russia to deteriorate to their lowest point in decades. Over the course of several years, both embassies have been severely impacted by the expulsion of numerous diplomats, and the US and European countries have slapped a number of sanctions on Russia. The measures to harm Moscow’s economy have been regularly extended by the allies.
