NEW DELHI: An Air India jet crashed in the western city of Ahmedabad less than a minute after takeoff, killing all but one of its passengers. Indian police were searching the scene of one of the country’s biggest aviation tragedies on Friday.
When the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers, crashed into a medical college dorm near Ahmedabad airport and caught fire on Thursday afternoon, scores more people were murdered. The airline reported that the only survivor, a British national of Indian descent, is receiving medical attention in a hospital.
The Ahmedabad air catastrophe has wounded us all. It is indescribable how many lives were lost in such a tragic and abrupt way. Following his visit to the accident scene in the capital of his home state of Gujarat, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent condolences to all the families who have been affected on social media.
169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and one Canadian were among the passengers. According to reports, the surviving passenger in seat 11A, which was close to an emergency exit in front of the plane’s wing, could jump out. Shortly after aircraft AI171 took off, he reported to Indian media that he had heard a tremendous noise.
