Indonesia Creates an AI Tool to aid in the Diagnosis of Malaria

JAKARTA: As part of its attempts to eradicate malaria by 2030, Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency is creating a system that uses artificial intelligence to aid in the diagnosis of the illness.

The World Health Organisation thinks that the true number of malaria infections in Indonesia was at least twice as high as the more than half a million cases reported in 2024 because of a lack of testing.

In a statement, Anto Satriyo Nugroho, chief of AI and cyber security at Indonesia’s national research agency, or BRIN, stated, “Our primary objective is to develop a computer-aided diagnosis system that can automatically identify malaria status from blood smear images.

A device like this might expedite the process of confirming malaria, which is currently mostly accomplished through microscopic inspection. We have high hopes that sustainable AI research and development will produce a valuable diagnostic tool that will greatly aid in Indonesia’s efforts to eradicate malaria,” Nugroho continued.

AI applications are becoming increasingly common, especially in the medical field to enhance clinical laboratory testing, illness diagnosis, and therapy selection. Researchers from Google Health and US and UK institutions reported in a 2020 article published in Nature on an AI model that scans mammograms with fewer false positives and false negatives than human specialists.
