Inside the Struggle: Families in Gaza Fighting Famine Conditions

Geneva: Since an October ceasefire that was meant to allow for a significant increase in humanitarian aid, thousands of children in Gaza have been treated for treatment for acute malnutrition, the UN children’s agency said on Tuesday.

9,300 children received treatment for severe acute malnutrition in October, when the first phase of an agreement to end the two-year Israel-Hamas war went into effect, according to UNICEF, the largest provider of malnutrition treatment in Gaza.

UNICEF spokesperson Tess Ingram told a Geneva news briefing via video link from Gaza that although the number has decreased from a peak of over 14,000 in August, it is still far higher than during a brief ceasefire in February and March and shows that relief flows are still insufficient.

We need to see a further decline in the number of young people admitted, as it is five times higher than in February. Meeting underweight newborns delivered in hospitals weighing less than one kilogram, Ingram said, “their tiny chests heaving with the effort of staying alive.

She stated that although UNICEF can bring significantly more aid into the enclave than before the October 10 accord, there are still hurdles, including ongoing security issues, route restrictions, and cargo delays and denials at crossings.
