DUBAI: Following initial uncertainty over the location of the upcoming nuclear talks, Iran announced Wednesday that the next session will take place in Rome this weekend. Iranian state media made the news at the same time that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian officially accepted the resignation of one of his vice presidents, who was a major negotiator for Tehran in the 2015 nuclear agreement with international powers.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, also landed in the Islamic Republic on Wednesday. Negotiations over the specific access that the IAEA inspectors would have under any proposed agreement may be part of his discussions.
Oman will arbitrate the negotiations once more on Saturday in Rome, according to the official TV statement. During negotiations last weekend in Muscat, the capital of the sultanate, Oman’s foreign minister acted as a mediator between the two parties. Iran insisted early on Tuesday that they would return to Oman, despite officials first identifying Rome as the venue for the talks on Monday. Although Trump called Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman on Tuesday when the monarch was in the Netherlands, American officials have not yet made public the location of the meeting.
