How Snapback Sanctions Could Escalate Tensions with Iran

European countries’ decision to trigger “snapback” sanctions against Iran could heighten global tensions at a time when fears of a wider Middle East conflict are already mounting, analysts warn. On Thursday, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom the region’s three largest economies launched a 30-day process to reinstate sanctions, citing what they described as “significant” breaches of the 2015 nuclear deal.

We’re heading toward a snapback scenario where sanctions are restored, and Iran is likely to respond in a way that adds to instability,” said Ryan Costello, policy director at the National Iranian American Council (NIAC). He cautioned that the move risks fueling fresh violence following Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year. “It’s another domino falling on the path to reigniting the June war,” he said.

The United States, which joined Israel in bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities in June, has welcomed the European step. At the same time, President Donald Trump’s administration signaled it is still open to dialogue. The United States remains available for direct engagement with Iran in pursuit of a peaceful, lasting resolution to the nuclear issue, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. “Snapback does not contradict our readiness for diplomacy; it strengthens it.
