JERUSALEM: Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced Thursday that Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, the author of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that set off the Gaza war, had been killed.
Although there are other possible outcomes, his death at the hands of Israeli soldiers in Gaza is a significant victory for Israel and a turning point in the year-long conflict.
Katz stated in a statement, “IDF soldiers killed mass murderer Yahya Sinwar today, who was responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7.”
Sinwar’s murder opens the door for the hostages to be released right away and for a shift to occur in Gaza that will result in a new reality free from Iranian and Hamas rule.
The Israeli police and army had previously performed DNA tests on the body of the man they thought was their arch-enemy.
Hamas did not immediately comment.
Families of hostages taken by Hamas in Gaza expressed their hope in Israel that a ceasefire may finally be established, allowing the captives to return home. Residents of Gaza expressed their belief that the battle would continue. The demise of Sinwar is a major boost to the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the devastating war in the Palestinian enclave grinds on into a second year.
