Israel Strikes Hezbollah Sites in Beirut After Destroying Key Bridge

BEIRUT: After destroying a bridge in eastern Lebanon to stop the Iran-backed group’s reinforcements from crossing, the Israeli military announced on Saturday that it had started attacking “Hezbollah infrastructure” in Beirut.

An AFP reporter witnessed smoke rising from one of the two thunderous explosions that occurred in the city within thirty minutes on Saturday. Two strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs were reported by local media. The area has been the focus of Israeli bombings recently as the IDF continues its ground invasion of the southern region of the country. Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel on March 2 in retaliation for the US-Israeli attack that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, drawing Lebanon into the Middle East conflict.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Friday that three peacekeepers were injured in a blast at one of its locations in the south of the nation close to the border, marking the third such incident in recent days. In order “to prevent the transfer of reinforcements and military equipment,” the Israeli military had threatened to attack two nearby bridges across the Litani River.
