Israeli and Syrian Officials Meet in Baku: Damascus Diplomatic Source

DAMASCUS: A Syrian and an Israeli official met in person in Baku on Saturday during President Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s visit to Azerbaijan, according to a diplomatic source in Damascus. After Israel first dismissed Al-Sharaa’s government as jihadist due to his prior ties to Al-Qaeda, the meeting was a significant step for the two nations, who had been enemies for decades.

The source, who asked to remain anonymous due to the delicate nature of the matter, stated, “A meeting took place between a Syrian official and an Israeli official on the sidelines of Al-Sharaa’s visit to Baku.

Israel maintains a strong diplomatic presence in the Caucasus country that borders its fiercest adversary, Iran, and is a major supplier of weapons to Azerbaijan. The discussion, which was centred on “the recent Israeli military presence in Syria,” did not include Al-Sharaa personally, the source continued.

Israel conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Syria following the ousting of long-time leader Bashar Assad in December to keep vital military assets out of the hands of the Islamist-dominated transitional government commanded by Al-Sharaa.
