Following Israel’s warning that its forces would “forcefully operate” in the region, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza stated on Monday that an Israeli operation in Khan Yunis, the largest southern city, resulted in 70 fatalities and over 200 injuries.
Following the Israeli army’s temporary evacuation order for portions of Khan Yunis, including the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone, thousands of Palestinians left the southern sections of the enclave.
In the region that saw intense combat earlier this year, the Israeli military declared that it will take action to reduce rocket firing.
The most recent event occurred a few days after Israel claimed to have struck a Hamas leader in Al-Mawasi, killing ninety-two according to the health ministry.
According to Gaza’s civil defense service, four more people died in the Jabalia refugee camp on Monday, while at least 12 people died in Gaza City.
Israel has promised that it will destroy Hamas and has begun heavy military operations in parts of Gaza that it had previously considered to be terrorist-free.
In response to calls for a ceasefire and a hostage-release agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made his way to Washington on Monday to address the US Congress.
Netanyahu will meet with US President Joe Biden on Thursday. Biden has pressed Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire, which has been in place for almost nine months now, following the attacks on Israel by the Palestinian terrorist organization on October 7.
