ISTANBUL: Although there were no initial indications of significant damage, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 rocked Istanbul and other parts of Turkey on Wednesday, causing widespread panic and several injuries in the 16 million-person city. The governor’s office in Istanbul, where citizens are terrified since the city is thought to be at high danger for a catastrophic earthquake, said that more than 150 individuals were hospitalised with injuries they received while attempting to leap from buildings.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicentre was located in the Sea of Marmara, around 40 kilometres (25 miles) southwest of Istanbul, and its shallow depth was 10 kilometres (almost 6 miles). It was felt in the city of Izmir, which is around 550 kilometres (340 miles) south of Istanbul, as well as in the nearby provinces of Tekirdag, Yalova, Bursa, and Balikesir. According to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the 13-second earthquake was followed by almost 50 aftershocks, the biggest of which measured 5.9.
At 12:49 p.m., on a public holiday, when many kids were not in school and were having a good time in Istanbul’s streets, the earthquake began. Residents in a panic hurried onto the streets from their houses and buildings. People were advised by the disaster and emergency management organisation to avoid buildings.
