NEW DELHI: As New Delhi attempts to finalise an early trade agreement and avoid retaliatory US tariffs, US Vice President JD Vance kicked up a four-day visit to India on Monday. Two months have passed since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met at the White House for Vance’s visit. When Vance emerged into the hot New Delhi sun to meet with Modi, he was met with a red carpet greeting complete with an honour guard and groups of folk dancers.
A visit to Agra, the location of the Taj Mahal, a white marble monument ordered by a Mughal emperor, is another highlight of Vance’s journey. Broadcasters in New Delhi have described the visit as “semi-private.” The US vice president is joined by his family, including his wife Usha, who is the daughter of Indian immigrants. According to India’s foreign ministry last week, Modi, 74, and Vance, 40, will “exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest” as well as “review the progress in bilateral relations.”
New Delhi expects to negotiate the first phase of a trade deal between the United States and India during the 90-day tariff halt that Trump announced earlier this month. India’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Randhir Jaiswal told reporters last week, “We are very confident that the visit will give a further boost to our bilateral ties.”
