LONDON: According to an Israeli human rights organization, Hussam Abu Safiya, a doctor imprisoned in Gaza, claims that Israeli prison guards have persisted in beating him, including on sensitive body areas, depriving him of sleep, and warning him not to tell his lawyer about the conditions of his incarceration.
Despite Abu Safiya’s recent transfer to a prison medical center, Physicians for Human Rights Israel warned on Wednesday that the Israel Prison Service is still delaying an independent medical evaluation. The group stated, “Dr Abu Safiya’s most recent testimony confirms that the pattern of deliberate abuse against him is continuing.” It further stated that he talked about “continuous violence, sleep deprivation, and threats aimed at preventing him from reporting the conditions of his detention to his lawyer.”
The (prison service) keeps delaying access for an independent physician, despite the fact that his medical condition necessitates additional evaluation and treatment. The importance of a rapid, independent medical assessment is only increased by the numerous testimonies and growing proof of harm. Since December 2024, Israel has detained Abu Safiya, the head of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, without accusation or trial.
