BEIJING: Following the White House’s announcement that China might be subject to tariffs of up to 245 percent as a result of its retaliatory steps, China’s foreign ministry declared on Thursday that China will not pay any heed if the US keeps playing the “tariff numbers game.” China’s total penalties comprise the most recent reciprocal duty of 125 percent, a 20 percent tax to address the fentanyl epidemic, and tariffs ranging from 7.5 percent to 100 percent on particular items to address unfair trade practices, according to a fact sheet sent by the White House on Tuesday.
Two weeks after announcing more tariffs on all nations, US President Donald Trump abruptly removed the higher “reciprocal tariffs” on dozens of nations while maintaining punitive levies on China. In reaction, Beijing increased its own tariffs on US imports and has not pursued negotiations, claiming that they can only take place on the basis of equality and respect for one another. Numerous other countries have started to consider bilateral agreements with Washington in the interim. China also lodged a fresh protest with the World Trade Organisation last week, claiming that Washington was in violation of the organization’s regulations and voicing “severe concern” over US tariffs.
