NEW DELHI: Umar Mehraj featured at least a dozen types of dates in his fruit arrangement at his store in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. He made sure that none of the dates were imported from Israel and meticulously sourced them from other parts of the Middle East. In the Indian-controlled Himalayan region, where the majority of the population is Muslim, dates are a staple food for breaking the fast during Ramadan.
In response to Israel’s continuous murderous attack on the people of Gaza and the West Bank, sellers are attempting to stop Israeli-labeled fruits from entering the local market, something they have done in the past. “We’ve taken the initiative to avoid buying as many Israeli goods as we can. We are completely successful, thank God,” Mehraj told Arab News.
How can we tell if it originates in Israel? All of the boxes have labels, so you can see where they are packaged and where they came from. These days, we are familiar with Israeli brands thanks to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp groups. In our stores, we steer clear of dates from those businesses. The media bureau of the enclave government has estimated that since October 2023, Israeli military attacks have killed at least 61,700 civilians in Gaza.
