US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Lebanon and Israel had extended their ceasefire for three weeks following a high-level meeting at the White House. Trump invited Israel’s envoy to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, and Lebanon’s ambassador to the United States, Nada Moawad, in the Oval Office for a second round of US-facilitated talks, a day after Israeli attacks killed at least five people, including a journalist.
The meeting went really well! “The United States will work with Lebanon to help it protect itself from Hezbollah,” Trump said on Truth Social. Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned military force fighting Israel, was not present during the talks. It claims it has “the right to resist” occupying soldiers. Trump also stated that he looked forward to hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the near future.
Trump also addressed to media in the Oval Office alongside the meeting participants, expressing his hope that the leaders would meet during the three-week cease-fire. He expressed optimism that the two countries could conclude a peace agreement this year.
