Libya Arrests Two Suspects Linked to Rocket Attack on UN Mission

Libyan authorities have arrested two people accused of attempting to launch a rocket attack on the United Nations mission in Tripoli back in August, the country’s attorney general’s office announced on Friday.

The prosecutor’s statement said the suspects were questioned by investigators in the capital before being placed in pre-trial detention. While their names and motives were not revealed, officials noted that both individuals were confronted with strong evidence linking them to the attack.

The attempted strike targeted the headquarters of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), but no one was injured and the building was not damaged. Authorities later confirmed that the assailants tried to use an anti-tank missile to hit the compound.

The incident took place the same day UNSMIL chief Hanna Tetteh was addressing the UN Security Council in New York. Following the attack, Libya’s Tripoli-based government condemned the act, calling it a “serious attempt to destabilize security” and harm the country’s ties with the international community. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Libya’s security forces and eliminating illegal armed groups operating across the country.
