Life Under Threat: Why Palestinian Farmers Are Leaving Their Land

LONDON: Israeli settlers allegedly attacked farmers from the Bisharat family in mid-January while they plowed their field in Mofiya, in the northern Jordan Valley. Palestinian officials and human rights organizations claim that this incident has become commonplace in the occupied West Bank.

According to witnesses, the settlers used pepper spray to attack the farmers before summoning Israeli troops. Later, two sons of Youssef Hussein Asmar Bisharat, Hussein and Mohammed, were taken into custody by Israeli forces, according to Tubas-based Palestinian official Mutaz Bisharat. This is the Jordan Valley’s everyday reality,” Bisharat said to Arab News. “Every Palestinian community repeats it.

Settlers assault citizens; the occupation army intervenes in favor of the settlers; Palestinians who try to defend themselves and their land are arrested; the occupation police file complaints against Palestinians,” he said, describing a recurring pattern.

Israeli settlers assaulted Palestinian farmers from the Abu Al-Tayyib family in late December when they were cultivating their land east of Khirbet Yarza. According to Bisharat, the settlers detained the farmers for over three hours while filming the interaction.

The altercation, which happened on December 26 east of the Khirbet Yarza region, got worse when a settler threatened to shoot Mahdi Daraghmeh, the head of the Malih village council, while brandishing a firearm.
