WASHINGTON: During their meeting at the White House on Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attempt to revive his friendship with Donald Trump while avoiding the US president’s ire over immigration and tariffs. According to the White House, Modi and Trump will also have a joint news conference. This is an unusual step from the Indian leader, who uses social media extensively but rarely answers questions from reporters.
Modi, who had cordial ties with Trump during his first term, is the most recent of several foreign leaders to vie for the presidency since the Republican’s return to office. As part of Trump’s immigration reform, India also welcomed a US military plane last week that carried 100 chained migrants, and New Delhi has promised a “strong crackdown” on illegal immigration of its own.
Vikram Misri, India’s top career diplomat, stated last week that the leaders have a “very close rapport,” despite the fact that their relationship hasn’t yet resulted in a breakthrough on a long-sought bilateral trade agreement.
Following his victory in the November election, Modi was one of the first to congratulate his “good friend” Trump. As a natural ally against a growing China, US presidents of both parties have placed a high priority on forging ties with India for almost thirty years.
