Mud houses are beloved by the residents for their link to the past and are recognizable emblems of the rich heritage of Najran, in southwest Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Press Agency claims that “these architectural gems have withstood the test of time, their authenticity and artistry testament to the ingenuity of generations.”
According to the SPA, protecting these cultural assets is not only a local priority but also a community-wide undertaking.
In order to preserve a significant portion of their identity and provide future generations with a physical link to their forebears, owners and the local community are striving to restore these structures to their former splendor.
“The traditional craftsmanship of these houses is very amazing. They are constructed from locally sourced materials, such as wood, clay, and stone, and they blend well with the surroundings.
“From laying the foundation to creating the roof, the elaborate process of building these houses is skillfully built, showcasing the builders’ dedication and skill.”
Maintaining Najran’s mud dwellings is essential as it develops further.
The SPA said, “These structures are more than just buildings; they are living testaments to a way of life and cultural heritage that must be celebrated and preserved for future generations.”
