In a historic trial in the United States, tech billionaire Elon Musk has testified for a second day against fellow OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, whom he accuses of breaking pledges to maintain the firm as a nonprofit devoted to the welfare of humanity.
The trial focuses on OpenAI’s 2015 establishment as a nonprofit organization, which subsequently transformed into a for-profit business.Between 2015 and 2017, Musk contributed roughly $38 million to the company’s founding. In his testimony in the case on Wednesday, Musk—the richest man in the world—told the jury that he no longer had faith that Altman would uphold the company’s charitable goals.
Musk, who departed the firm in 2018, claimed that by late 2022, he was worried that Altman was attempting to “steal the charity” and that “it turned out to be true.” Altman did not testify, but he was present at the federal court sessions in California. The attorneys for OpenAI refuted Musk’s assertions. According to the legal staff for the massive artificial intelligence (AI) company, there was never a pledge to stay a charity.
Musk’s action, according to OpenAI’s lawyers, is an attempt to weaken the AI behemoth in favor of his own business, xAI. According to Reuters, OpenAI is set for an initial public offering (IPO) with a potential valuation of $1 trillion.
