Next Week, Ukraine Suggests Holding new Peace Negotiations With Russia

KYIV: After discussions broke down in early June, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced Saturday that Kyiv has offered Moscow a fresh round of peace talks next week. Moscow and Kyiv have had two rounds of negotiations in Istanbul, but neither round has produced any progress toward a ceasefire; instead, it has produced agreements to repatriate the corpses of slain soldiers and extensive prisoner swaps.

In his evening speech, Zelensky said, “Secretary of the Security Council Umerov also reported that he had proposed the next meeting with the Russian side for next week. “The negotiations need to pick up speed,” he continued.

Zelensky reaffirmed his willingness to meet with Putin in person. “To really ensure peace  lasting peace,” he stated, “a meeting at the leadership level is needed. Russia made several tough demands during the negotiations last month, including a request that Ukraine surrender additional territory and refrain from accepting any military assistance from the West. At the time, Kyiv rejected them as unacceptable and questioned why more talks were necessary if Moscow was unwilling to compromise.

After US President Donald Trump gave Russia 50 days to reach a peace agreement or face penalties, the Kremlin announced earlier this month that it was prepared to resume negotiations with Ukraine.
