Over The Tasman Sea, Civilian Flights are Diverted Due to a Chinese Warship Training

Sydney— Chinese warships participated in what appeared to be a live-fire drill on Friday, prompting commercial aircraft to steer clear of airspace over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. China reportedly warned that three of its warships would fire live weapons during a military drill, causing at least three commercial planes to change their path. Commercial pilots were alerted to a possible airspace hazard by domestic regulator Airservices Australia, while the main airline of the next nation, Air New Zealand, stated that it had “modified flight paths as needed to avoid the area, with no impact on our operations.”

Australian defence officials stated that they were unsure if there was any live weapon fire following the warning. Anthony Albanese, the prime minister of Australia, declared that the danger was over. Citing data from his Defence Ministry, Albanese informed reporters that there was no immediate threat to either Australian or New Zealand installations. For days, P-8 Poseidon surveillance aircraft and Australian and New Zealand military vessels have been keeping an eye on the three Chinese warships: the replenishment vessel Weishanhu, the cruiser Zunyi, and the frigate Hengyang.
