BEIRUT, Lebanon: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon reiterated its demand that Israel “cease aggressive behaviour” after reporting on Friday that an Israeli attack close to their post in the south of the nation injured a peacekeeper.
The troops in southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL serves as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon and has been collaborating with Lebanon’s army to sustain a year-old truce between Israel and the militant organization Hezbollah, have reported the most recent incident.
This morning, a UNIFIL patrol examining a roadblock in the village of Bastarra was hit by heavy machine gunfire from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) positions south of the Blue Line.” A nearby grenade explosion was followed by shooting, according to a statement from UNIFIL.
The sound of the gunfire and the explosion left one peacekeeper slightly injured with ear concussion,” the force continued. In Kfarshuba, south Lebanon, UNIFIL reported on Friday that “another patrol carrying out a routine operational task also reported machine gunfire from the Israeli side in immediate proximity to their position.”
The peacekeeping team claimed to have communicated its actions in these regions to the Israel army. UNIFIL reported earlier this month that Israeli forces opened fire on its peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. It claimed that Israeli forces opened fire on its troops in the south last month, while Israel’s military claimed that it fired warning shots after mistaking blue helmets for “suspects.
