Political, Military, and Religious Trade names are Forbidden by Saudi Trade Name Law

Political, military, and religious trade names are forbidden by the recently passed Saudi Trade Name Law. During its weekly meeting on September 17, the Council of Ministers approved the Trade Name Law and the Commercial Registration Law. Following their publication in the official Umm Al-Qura newspaper, the key provisions of the law are made public.

Anyone who uses a reserved or limited trade name in contravention of the legislation faces fines of up to SR50000, according to a clause in the law. According to the legislation, all merchants must choose a trade name and enter it in the commercial register. According to the law, any merchant who does not adopt a trade would be fined SR50000.

The Law of Trade Names seeks to maximise the value of names, guarantee their protection, and arrange the processes for reserving and registering them in the commercial registry. The law stipulated the requirements that must be fulfilled for a trade name to be registered or reserved, and also permitted the reservation of a trade name prior to its registration for a certain term that might be extended. By permitting names that contain Arabic, non-Arabic, or Arabized words, or that are composed of letters or digits, the law further broadened its application.
