Promises of Calm Meet Reality as Minneapolis Tensions Continue

MINNEAPOLIS: Following weeks of strong rhetoric and altercations with demonstrators, President Donald Trump appeared to indicate a readiness to reduce tensions in Minneapolis following a second fatal shooting by federal immigration officials, but there was little indication on Wednesday of any notable adjustments.

When Trump sent his senior border adviser to Minnesota to oversee the immigration crackdown, it was clear that he was under pressure. Then came comments about the Democratic mayor and governor that seemed to be conciliatory.

After a phone conversation, Trump said that he and Governor Tim Walz, whom he had been criticizing for weeks, were on “a similar wavelength.” Following a meeting with Mayor Jacob Frey, the president said that “lots of progress is being made” and commended the talk. However, there were few indications of a change on city streets. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, immigration enforcement activities and clashes with activists persisted on Wednesday.

On a roadway in north Minneapolis, a group of demonstrators pointed out federal officials in a car while blowing whistles. A small group of activists followed the police’ vehicle for a few blocks before they halted once more.

Even though the reporters identified themselves as journalists, federal Bureau of Prisons agents shoved one of the Associated Press journalists who had gotten out of their car to record the incident, threatened to arrest them, and ordered them to return to their vehicle. The enforcement efforts have involved officers from several federal agencies.
