Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, addressed the United Nations Security Council on Thursday with a pointed question: “Have you seen a state attack negotiators like that?” He was referring to an Israeli airstrike on a diplomatic compound in Doha that killed several people, including a Qatari security officer, just days earlier.
Speaking at an emergency session called by Algeria, Somalia, and Pakistan, the Prime Minister labeled the September 9 attack a “criminal assault” and a blatant infringement on Qatar’s sovereignty. He warned that it could seriously undermine the fragile ceasefire talks and broader peace initiatives in Gaza. The strike targeted a residential complex in Doha where members of Hamas’s political bureau and their families were staying—a location well-known to diplomats, journalists, and others engaged in mediation efforts.
Sheikh Mohammed explained that the Hamas delegation had been in the midst of discussing a new U.S. ceasefire proposal when the missiles hit around 3:45 p.m. local time. “This was no accident,” he stressed to the Council. “This was a targeted effort to sabotage diplomacy, to perpetuate suffering, and to silence those seeking a way out of the bloodshed.
