Stargazers Witness Rare Sunspots and the Bright Mars ‘Red Dot’

RIYADH: On Tuesday night, two significant astronomical occurrences occurred in the northern border region: the development of enormous sunspots and a remarkable conjunction of the Moon with Mars and the star Chi Virginis.

Sightseeers could see the former, while astrophotographers could work in perfect conditions because Mars was easily recognized by its reddish-orange color.

The moon appeared to be in alignment with Mars, visible above the star Chi Virginis in the Virgo constellation, according to Adnan Khalifah, a member of the space and astronomy club. On Tuesday, however, a number of sunspots were seen on the surface of the sun; they were dark in appearance but shone brilliantly. The spots, which are visible via modest telescopes and stretch tens of thousands of kilometers, are some of the largest ones this year.

Studying these locations, according to astronomers, is essential to comprehending the sun’s 11-year cycle, which controls solar activity. Satellite navigation and communication systems may be impacted by solar flares or geomagnetic storms caused by sunspots.
