PARIS— Saudi Arabia took part in the 220th session of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Executive Board, which wrapped up its sessions on Wednesday at the Paris, France-based organization’s headquarters. The Kingdom was represented by the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, its Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, and other pertinent national organisations. Fahad Al-Ruwaili, the Kingdom’s appointed permanent representative to UNESCO and ambassador to France and the Principality of Monaco, led the Saudi mission.
The team stressed throughout the meeting Saudi Arabia’s dedication to leading the world in artificial intelligence (AI) for the good of humanity. It emphasised how the Kingdom embraced UNESCO’s Ethics of Artificial Intelligence early on and promoted these values to advance the SDGs at the national level. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is leading regional initiatives by housing the International Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), which encourages the global adoption of these moral principles to help accomplish the SDGs in cooperation with international partners. The Kingdom’s proposed resolution on ICAIRE made a substantial contribution to the AI debate. A national commissions meeting was also held by the Saudi delegation during the Executive Board session, where a number of resolutions addressing procedural, substantive, budgetary, and administrative matters were issued.
