RIYADH: Recent successes by inventors in the Kingdom have been attributed to the support given by Saudi authorities for scientific research, innovation, and university instruction. According to official data, 8,029 patent applications were filed in the nation in 2024—a 13.3% increase over the year before. Furthermore, 4,355 patents were published, 1,578 industrial designs were registered, and 31,834 trademarks were registered.
Research and development spending in Saudi Arabia climbed 17.4% from 2022 to 2023, reaching SR22.6 billion ($6 billion). Ophthalmologist Dr. Saad Al-Anzi, who won the grand prize at the Geneva International Exhibition in April this year for creating an affordable surgical tool for cataract operations, is one recent example of a Saudi innovator who has been recognised with awards for research and innovation at international events. Six other Saudi innovators also received global awards at the event, and 134 others received global medals.
And last October, 39 King Abdulaziz University students won a worldwide prize for their concepts, innovations, and new goods at the IENA Expo in Germany.SR22.6 billion ($6 billion) was invested in research and development in Saudi Arabia in 2023, a 17.4% increase over 2022.
