Masam Project Clears 968 Landmines in Yemen

RIYADH: Teams from Saudi Arabia’s Project Masam cleared 968 explosive devices from different parts of Yemen last week, according to a recent report. The clearance included 925 unexploded ordnances, 32 anti-tank mines, four anti-personnel mines and seven improvised explosive devices. Project Managing Director Ousama Al-Gosaibi confirmed that since the initiative launched in 2018, a total of 512,323 explosive devices have been removed.

These explosives, planted randomly in populated and rural areas, have posed serious risks to civilians, particularly children, women and the elderly. The latest operations were carried out across several governorates, including Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale and Saada.

Project Masam not only removes landmines but also invests in training Yemeni demining engineers, equipping them with modern tools and techniques to continue the effort locally. In addition, the initiative provides assistance to Yemenis who explosive devices have injured. The work helps secure villages, roads and schools, ensuring safer civilian movement and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
