Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property: The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, or SAIP, is in charge of enforcing laws, regulations, and international agreements about intellectual property, safeguarding the rights of owners in a variety of fields, and promoting awareness of the field’s significance and relationship to nation-building. In 2017, the Council of Ministers passed a resolution creating the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property. The authority has a board of directors with six members and a chairman, and its offices are in the capital, Riyadh.
To help develop the authority’s goals and provide advice, comments, and recommendations on any topic aimed at improving all areas relating to intellectual property within the authority, the CEO decided to create an advisory council. It examines the authority’s goals, plans, and regulations to ensure they align with global developments.

One of the main responsibilities of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property is copyright protection. About 1,376 copyright-related matters were processed by the authority, including 1,023 in 2021. Within the creative realm of intellectual property, copyright allows creators or writers to use and profit from their work while also prohibiting unauthorized use or gain. In the same year, the authority received 194 complaints of trademark breaches in different regions around the Kingdom as part of its duties.
The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property’s Mystery Shopper
About 2,286 mystery shopper visits—covert surveillance activities at establishments and locations suspected of violating intellectual property rights were carried out by the authority in 2021. Trained mystery shoppers are used to pose as purchasers or consumers. Furthermore, 2,079 websites and pieces of information that violated intellectual property regulations were blocked and removed as a consequence of the authority’s 3,991 electronic inspection visits. Additionally, more than 95,000 goods that violated intellectual property rights were collected.
Submissions made to the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority
As of October 2022, there were around 3,979 requests for patent registrations, 38,130 applications for trademark registration, and 1,400 applications for industrial design deposits filed with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property.
Taking part in the Budapest Treaty and the Strasbourg Agreement
In 2020, the Kingdom became a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Strasbourg Agreement on International Patent Classification and the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for Patent Procedure.
