Riyadh: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended his congratulations to Sanae Takaichi, who made history as Japan’s first female prime minister, the Saudi Press Agency reported early Wednesday.
Japan’s parliament officially elected Takaichi on Tuesday following the resignation of former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Her appointment marks a significant political milestone for Japan, where female representation in top leadership has remained limited.
In her first address after being elected, Prime Minister Takaichi emphasised plans to strengthen Japan’s defence capabilities and maintain close cooperation with allies. Her administration is gearing up to welcome U.S. President Donald Trump next week in Tokyo, where regional security and trade are expected to dominate discussions.
Takaichi’s rise follows months of political turbulence for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which suffered major setbacks in the July upper house elections and lost its lower house majority last year. Her leadership begins under a fragile coalition deal with a new political partner, expected to shift Japan’s ruling bloc further to the right.
