MAKKAH: Calls for unity among Muslims worldwide have been made by attendees of the second “Building Bridges Between Islamic Schools of Thought” conference in Makkah. Under the patronage of King Salman, the summit convened Muslim leaders from over 90 nations representing a variety of faiths and began Thursday. “Towards an effective Islamic alliance” is the theme of the event, which is being organized by the Muslim World League.
The conference began with a number of panels discussing issues pertaining to Muslim minorities worldwide as well as developments in Palestine, Sudan, and Syria. Senior muftis, academics, intellectuals, and members from Islamic councils from many sects and denominations are among the attendees. In his introductory remarks, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh of Saudi Arabia emphasized the vital duty of Islamic academics to “elevate the voice of wisdom” in order to maintain Muslim unity.
Dr. Fahd Al-Majed, secretary-general of the Council of Senior Scholars, read his words, which urged reason to triumph over disagreement. In the interest of compassion for Muslims and their unity, he said, “it is our duty to build relationships, mutual trust, and the fundamental bonds of brotherhood.”
